The Least of These My Brethren

Selling Vegetables to Serve Christ

Francisco Gamez has been a pastor for many years. Although he is not currently in charge of a congregation, he is the president of the regional Pastors’ Counsel and has many responsibilities there. However, like most ministers here, he has to provide most of his own financial support for himself and his family. Having a small business enables him to do this.

In addition to his ministerial responsibilities, Francisco has also been a hardworking businessman for many years. He has two different businesses that supply his family’s needs: (1) he drives a school bus in Siguatepeque, and (2) he also buys and sells vegetables in a nearby market.

For the last 12 years, Francisco has been buying the vegetables in Siguatepeque and taking them to a nearby town called La Esperanza to sell at the market. During all of these years, he has had to buy his products on credit. But the warehouses charge a much higher price for produce when a person purchases produce on credit. This makes it very hard for the poor to ever get ahead. However, Francisco heard about the Society of the Good Shepherd and realized that our ministry was perhaps the opportunity he had been waiting for.

After receiving an interest-free loan from the Society, Francisco is now able to pay cash for the vegetables he buys, therefore making more profit. His business has improved, and he feels joyful and grateful to God and the Society. With the extra profits he is making, Francisco will be able to pay back his loan. Eventually he should have enough capital saved up to always be able to purchase his produce with cash.

To all of you who are involved in one way or the other in this Ministry, thank you for being a great blessing to many people like Francisco and their families! May God bless your lives!
