Great Book. A great introduction to the early church writers. This book had me cross examining my biblical understanding with both the scriptures and the early church writers. The simple and logical approach David Bercot took was easy to follow and honest. I was both encouraged and challenged in my faith. What else could you want out of a book?
This book is Jesus like in that it exposes our hearts.
Jesus said, "You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:`These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men.' " -Mt 15:7-9.
Jesus exposes just who are unbelievers.
Anyone that holds to man's teaching, elevates it over what God teaches and is unwilling to change, is exposed as not really having Godly intentions, no matter how Godly they may appear!
If you truly want to obey Jesus then this is a must read!
This is a book that every Christian should read as an introduction to historical Christianity. Sure, this relatively short read does not cover everything that the early church taught and believed. One could read for months on end and still not read all of the writings of the early Christians. Bercot does a wonderful job of putting together some of the most important and relevant issues, and also poses some thought provoking questions. After reading this book, if you have any doubts as to whether or not the author is biased, start reading The Ante-Nicene Fathers for yourself. I’m sure you will find, as I did, that he has represented them honestly and accurately.
I can't tell you enough how important it is to understand church history. Especially history of the first Christians. It is very beneficial for our walk with Christ as it sheds clarity and understanding on many of the New Testament's teachings. This book changed my outlook on the Christian faith. Back in '98 I was coerced into reading it, but by the time that I got to the third or forth page I could not put it down. While reading I realized that my faith had been only two dimensional. This work added a third dimension, that is depth, to my faith. Outside the Bible, it is the most profound work that I have ever read, and I have recommended it to hundreds of people over the years, and recommend it to you.
