Jungle Doctor

The Jungle Doctor

Paul White was a missionary doctor to Africa, who eventually became known as the “Jungle Doctor.” After giving his life to Christ as a young man, White focused on helping to spread the Gospel of Christ. He studied medicine with the specific aim of serving as a missionary doctor in Africa. After completing his medical studies, White went to Tanganyika (modern day Tanzania). There, he learned to clothe biblical teaching in stories, creating stories with the timeless quality of Aesop’s fables. But Paul White’s stories pointed people to Christ—something Aesop could not do.

Eventually, White was forced to leave Africa because of his wife’s failing health. He and his wife returned to his homeland of Australia. Rather than giving up on spreading the Gospel, White now began writing stories for children, based upon his experiences from serving as a “jungle doctor.” Written in the 1930s and 1940s, the “Jungle Doctor” tales became known world-wide and are still in print today.
