S-Grace-Misunderstood-Word Download: Grace - The Most Misunderstood Word in the Bible - New!

David Bercot. Many Christians have a completely wrong concept of Christianity because they misunderstand one single word: grace. Most of us have been told that grace means God's "unmerited favor" and that it stands in contrast to human effort or reward. But how can we know what a particular word mean in the days of Jesus and the apostles.?

The Greek word that is translated as "grace" is charis. Bercot argues that the only way we can know what charis meant in ancient times is to go the writings of that period. For New Testament words, the three most valuable ancients sources we have are (1) the Septuagint, (2) the New Testament, and (3) the early Christian writings. These sources reveal that charis was an everyday word, meaning goodwill or favor. This goodwill might by totally undeserved, or it might be extended because of something commendable on the part of the recipient.

Beyond any doubt, salvation is a gift. But it is a gift conditioned on our maintaining an obedient love-faith relationship with Christ. This message could change of your whole concept of Christianity!

David Bercot. When most Protestants think of great Christian leaders, they usually don't think of the 12 apostles. However, they were some of the greatest Christians who have ever lived. One of the things that made them great was their willingness to fade into the background and let others - like Paul - receive more glory. Meanwhile, they were quietly going about planting Christ's church throughout the world. When most of us think of the 12 apostles, we thing of them bickering over who would be the greatest. But when the time came, that is very thing they didn't do. The twelve worked together as a perfect team, without any rivalry among them. They had no desire to leave monuments, biographies, or accounts of their ministries.

When called upon to leave written records of their time with Jesus, they left accounts that portrayed their foolishness, but little of their wisdom. They were content to be remembered for their mistakes and failures. Because of their humble, quiet leadership, they were able to leave a strong, united Church at the time they died, instead of 12 divided, bickering groups of churches. That's what true greatness looks like!

D. Bercot. The Book of Acts ends with Paul’s first imprisonment in Rome. But what happened after that? What eventually became of Paul? What about Peter, John and the rest of the apostles? How far did Christianity spread in the 1st and 2nd centuries? Who led the church after the apostles died? What challenges did the new church face?

Happily, we don’t have to guess about such matters. The historical record of the 2nd century sheds considerable light on what happened during the 1st century after the Book of Acts was written. This message covers the period from A.D. 30 to the middle of the 2nd century.

As Bender explains, “The Anabaptists were concerned most of all about a true Christian life, that is, a life patterned after the teaching and example of Christ.” This is Bender’s original message, read by Dean Taylor, author of the recent best seller, A Change of Allegiance. more.

D. Bercot.
The Roman Catholic Church claims that Peter was the first pope. It further claims that the pope, or bishop of Rome, has been vested with primary authority over all other Christians as "Christ's vicar on earth." The Catholic Church also claims that the pope is infallible when defining matters of faith and morals.

But is this what Christians originally believed? Bercot quotes from Scripture and the early Christians to demonstrate that Rome's claims have no basis.

In less than 300 years, Christianity spread from Jerusalem to virtually every country in the civilized world. Yet, Christians did this without the aid of wealth, military force, or social status. Moreover, they did it without compromising the Gospel. What was their secret? What methods did they use to spread the Gospel? ... more.

D. Bercot. Most people think that the theory that life on earth got here by accident is a modern view—a product of the age of science. However, as Bercot demonstrates in his message, the teaching that life on earth sprung up by accident is something that some of the ancient Greek philosophers taught centuries before the birth of Christ. It is not a theory that was born out of the age of science—but rather a relic from the age of myth. It came from the age when many people thought that humans sprang from dragon’s teeth!

Since the days of the apostles, very few Christians have had such an obedient love-faith relationship with Jesus, as did Francis of Assisi. Born into a wealthy family in medieval Italy, Francis gave up wealth and honor for the kingdom of God. He was even disinherited by his father. However, he and his band of brothers preached the gospel of Jesus throughout Europe and set an example for all Christians on what it means to truly live by the Sermon on the Mount. Francis even preached Christ to the Muslim sultan of Egypt.

Francis’ life is not only inspiring and challenging, but it teaches us much about God’s grace and His love for all people.

In the first century, the disciple Thaddeus brought Christianity to the Persian Empire, establishing what came to be known as the Church of the East. This kingdom-minded church took Christianity to China, India, Southeast Asia, Mongolia, and even Siberia. At one time, these Christians encompassed a geographical area greater in size than that of the Roman Catholic Church. However, when these Christians refused to give Mary the title, “Mother of God,” the Catholic Church branded them as heretics and labeled them as Nestorians.

D. Bercot. There were two primary heretical groups during the New Testament period: The Nicolaitans and the Gnostics. Revelation refers to the Nicolaitans, and both Paul and John allude to the Gnostics in their letters. But the New Testament tells us very little about what these groups believed and practiced.

Both of these groups grew larger once the apostles passed away, and the early Christian writings provide considerable information about both of these early heretical groups. In this CD, Bercot explains how both of these groups originated and what they believed and practiced.
