If the “plain people” of North America are to be understood in terms of their own concerns, we must consider sympathetically their own expressions and the biblical cadences they echo.

Having maintained, with the tolerance of their society, a simple life as “the quiet in the land,” these folk still prize such passé virtues as modesty, humility, and obedience to God’s will, as interpreted by a disciplined community of faith.

Roger Hertzler. Jesus told us, ““It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” And again, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven.”

Many Christians who take Jesus’ commandments very seriously on nonresistance and divorce shrug off His teachings on laying up treasures on earth. In this challenging book, Hertzler challenges all of us to take Jesus’ teachings on wealth seriously.

Probably no scene from The Martyrs Mirror is quite as memorable as that of Dirk Willems turning to save the life of the drowning deputy who had been sent to arrest him. Despite his act of Christian love, the Catholic authorities still ordered the deputy to arrest Dirk, who they later burned at the stake. Yet, in the end, Dirk Willems has outlived his executioners.

The story of Dirk Willems is one that should never be forgotten. To that end, we have procured a professional artist to create an oil painting of this memorable scene. The painting closely follows the etching in The Martyr¡¯s Mirror , although it is not intended to be an exact copy of it.

We are offering large full color prints of this oil painting at the affordable price of $6.95 each. The prints are on 80 lb. card stock, enhanced with a glossy coating. These prints are suitable for framing or can be hung as posters. The picture does not come framed.

We offer discounts on multiple copies, as follows:

1 copy = $6.95
2 copies = $5.45 ea.
3 copies = $5.25 ea.

Leonard Verduin. Practically all Christians have heard about the Reformers. But few have heard about their "stepchildren"—the groups of Christians, like the Anabaptists, who sprung up during the Reformation and were committed to radical discipleship. The Reformers tried to silence these "stepchildren"—but they lived on. Verduin devotes a chapter to each aspect of Anabaptist faith and life that were suggested by the derisive names their opponents gave them.

How do you run a machine shop without electricity? What do you do for entertainment without a television. How do you farm without a tractor? How do you get hot water without electricity or natural gas? This book provides an insightful look into Amish life and the ingenious ways they have a good life without many of the modern inventions we take for granted.

Anyone who has been around the Amish has no doubt made a number of puzzling observations: They cannot drive cars, but they can pay others to drive them. They allow electricity generated by solar panels, but not if it’s provided by a power company. They are not permitted to have telephones in their homes, but they can use a phone booth located outside their house. They use modern farm machinery – so long as it is pulled by horses. Although all of these things seem contradictory and arbitrary, in reality there are wise and well-thought-out reasons behind all of them.

Nothing says more about the state of Christianity in our time than how Christians do, or refuse to do, “mission work.” All the way from presenting the Gospel through entertainment (Christian movies and festivals) to preaching such a narrow, sectarian Gospel, based on such wobbly “fundamentals” that no one gets convinced (at least not for long), Christians have tried desperately through the last century to make themselves relevant, effective, or at least heard.
