The Least of These My Brethren

A Resourceful Wife Supplements Family Income

A huge part of the economy in Honduras depends on coffee. As a result, many families are dependent on coffee farms in one way or the other. During the harvest season, many underprivileged families are able to “catch their breath” for a little while, financially speaking. Usually, all family members participate in harvesting coffee, which builds bonding in the family.

The problem for them comes once the harvest is over. For the next seven to nine months, most farm workers are either out of a job or else have only part-time farm employment. As a result, they have to find some other source of income until the following harvest. This was the case for Aida Santos and her family. Aida and her husband soon saw the need of having a business that would help provide for the family during the months in between harvests.

Aida decided to start a neighborhood mini-mart—called a pulperia—in the small town where they lived, named Tutule. However, things did not go as well as she expected. So she and her husband decided to move to La Paz. It was the right decision! Her pulperia did much better, since La Paz is a much bigger community than Tutule. This has given Aida a lot more potential customers and her business has continued to grow ever since. Her husband still works at the coffee farm. During harvest season, her husband and some of their children move to the farm for a few months to work there full time. Aida stays home and takes care of the pulperia, since they will greatly depend on it once the harvest is over.

The Society of the Good Shepherd granted her a loan to give her business a little push. She has invested the loan in buying more products to offer her customers. As a result, her business keeps growing. We visited her recently and were happy to see how well she is doing. She is very grateful for all the help.

Thank you for being such a great blessing to many families like Aida’s. May God bless you! Nancy Barahona
