Hugo Romero: Getting Rid of Pests

Honduras

February 12, 1987, is a very important date for Brother Hugo Romero. That was the day that Jesus came into his heart, and his life took that path that leads to victory in the middle of downfalls. After his conversion, Brother Hugo served as the assistant to the pastor of an Evangelical Reformed congregation in Honduras for about nine years. It was there that he met Karina Escoto, whom he later married. That church places a very strong emphasis on living by Christ’s teachings. Brother Hugo has always looked for similar churches wherever he goes.

In 1996, Brother Hugo moved to El Mochito, a small village in the rural state of Santa Bárbara. (This is also the place where one of the largest mines in Honduras is located.) When he was living in El Mochito, Hugo started a small extermination business. He explained to me: “I was able to start my business because of two things: first because I saw small cockroaches in my house and I had to get rid of them, and then later because I received help through a loan from the Society of the Good Shepherd.”

Actually, Brother Hugo started his pest control business a year before he got the loan from the Society in 2003, but he did not have sufficient equipment or materials for his business to get very far off the ground. God opened a door for Hugo when he was granted a loan from the Society. “From that point on,” he told me, “And with God’s help, my business has really grown.” First of all, with the loan, Hugo was able to buy the additional equipment and supplies he needed. Secondly, with the necessary equipment and capital, Hugo was able to expand his business to Siguatepeque. Three years ago, Hugo and his wife Karina and their three children moved to Siguatepeque—which is now the center of his business.

Hugo told me that establishing an extermination business in Honduras is not easy. Many families cannot afford an exterminator, and there is competition from larger pest control companies. Nevertheless, Hugo has always tried to provide good service to his customers at a fair price. His reputation for quality service, using modern equipment, has grown, and now some of the largest businesses in Honduras are using his services.

Brother Hugo told me that the business has blessed his family in many ways. First, they have finally been able to purchase a house to live in. They also have been able to buy a used car to provide them with transportation. Another blessing is that Hugo has the privilege of serving the Lord through an outreach ministry of his church. As part of this ministry, he gives free pest control services to different institutions like rural schools and nursing homes.

From the beginning, Brother Hugo was faithful in paying off the loan he received from the Society of the Good Shepherd. He not only now has paid off his entire loan—he even paid it off early. He and his family thank all of you who made the loan possible, which has blessed them so much. Nancy Barahona.
