Third Work Begins in Honduras

Deborah and I just recently returned from our latest trip to Honduras. It proved to be one of our most joyous trips. On our way to Honduras, our plane had a brief layover in Houston, Texas. Here we joined up with Jerrell Hein from San Marcos, Texas, and with the Gary Miller family from Ellensburg, Washington. We were all on the same flight together from Houston to San Pedro Sula, Honduras.

I have previously written about Gary Miller, who oversees the microloan ministry started last year in Comayagua, Honduras. Comayagua is about a thirty minute drive from Siguatepeque, where our work in Honduras is centered.

The day after arriving in Honduras, we all drove to Comayagua to visit with a number of the loan recipients there and to meet the new local directors who will be supervising the day-to-day ministry there for the Society. That afternoon, we all traveled to the small town of La Paz, where a third microloan ministry is being organized. Jerrell Hein will be overseeing this new work.

La Paz is a community located about 20 minutes away from Comayagua and, like many other towns in Honduras, it has a high incidence of poverty. Over the years, the Society has made a couple of individual loans to some Christians in La Paz, with very good results. However, these loans were supervised from Siguatepeque, 50 minutes away. Now, through Jerrell’s initiative, we will have a locally administered loan ministry right in La Paz. When we all arrived in La Paz, we attended a meeting with a number of local pastors to explain to them the nature of our ministry. Our director in Siguatepeque, Luis Vega, had organized the meeting ahead of time. At the meeting, Luis and Jerrell gave details about our planned work.

They also shared experiences from Siguatepeque and from the individuals in La Paz to whom we have already made loans. They detailed the benefits and blessings that God is providing for the communities in which loans have already been given. It was definitely a time of blessing, and the pastors were all excited about the new work.

Over the next few months, Jerrell and Luis will be working to put together a local board of directors in La Paz and to begin making the first loans. We have already received a number of loan applications from needy Christians there. Please pray for this new work in La Paz, as well as for God’s continued blessings on the work in Siguatepeque and Comayagua.
