Using Dentistry as a Ministry

Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me." Matt. 25:40

Honduras microloan Miguel Orellana and his wife have a real heart for serving others—particularly the poor. After Miguel finished his studies to become a dentist, he did not practice dentistry right away. Rather, he and his wife moved to a rural village in Honduras where a large percentage of the population are living in extreme poverty. There, both of them participated in a ministry that is helping children in that community.

Honduras microloan After serving there for several years, Miguel and his wife recently moved back to Siguatepeque, where Miguel decided to use his dental skills to minister to the poor. The church he attends operates a medical clinic that provides medical services to people from the church, as well as others in the community, at a very low price. The church provided Miguel with a vacant Sunday School classroom to set up a dental practice, where he could provide dental services to the poor at low prices. However, Miguel did not have the financial resources to convert this Sunday School room into a dental office.

Honduras microloan So Miguel approached the Society of the Good Shepherd and explained his vision to us. The Society provided Miguel with an interest-free loan, which enabled him to purchase the furniture and tools needed to set up a very basic dental clinic.

God has been faithful, and Miguel is off to a good start. Furthermore, recently a dentist in the U.S. donated some used dental equipment to Miguel that he needed. The equipment is en route to Honduras by boat. Please pray that the equipment gets to Honduras safely and can be transported from the port to Siguatepeque without any issues.
