Inspiring but flawed (5/5) Feb 26, 2009 Another Pilgrim
Mostly very inspiring accounts of Spirit-inspired Kingdom movements in Russia over the last few centuries. My only problem with it is that the authors appear to treat Leo Tolstoy as a true Christian. He loved Jesus' teachings and faithfully passed them on, but he denied the supernatural facts of the Bible and his version of the Kingdom of God was not a peculiar people called out of the world but the world itself transformed by Jesus' teachings. Fallen humanity is not capable of this transformation and efforts to bring it about can only be a tragic failure. This is the Social Gospel, not the gospel of Christ. To treat Tolstoy as a believer is also to blur the standard for recognizing a believer. However, there are many inspiring stories of true Christianity in the book otherwise.
