An absolutely life-changing book. As a young Christian raised in the mainstream Evangelical Church, for most of my life I've struggled to piece together Christianity as I saw it in the world around me with what I read in the Bible. My political opinions would swing wildly from right to left to right again; as an Evangelical politics and Christianity were intricately intertwined into everything I'd been taught. I knew very little of the Early Church or what they believed. Then I met an Anabaptist family and was instantly drawn to their simple, peaceful and non-political faith. They gave me a copy of this book (maybe they hoped it would quiet some of the questions I was firing at them!) and I could not put it down. The accounts of the various groups of Kingdom Christians, their suffering at the hands of the mainstream church and their conviction and nonresistance through it all had me in tears. This Kingdom as revealed in the teachings of Jesus, the Apostles and the early church fathers opened my eyes to an entirely new vision of Christianity - and it really has turned my world upside down. |
